Space walk kerbal space program controls5/30/2023 At one end of the Venn diagram, Agaena is to the 'left' of the ship. If you shift one circle a bit, say to the side (radial/antiradial), you end up with slightly offset circles (think a Venn diagram). They're actually travelling in circles around Kerbin - circles that are more or less concentric until you start moving around, because even the tiniest puff from your jetpack will change your orbital characteristics slightly. Agaena and her ship aren't travelling in parallel lines. Remember, even though motion in space seems linear, that's only because the scale is so large. Which you'll have to learn if you want to recover your stranded Kerbals, because no matter what method you use - a Klaw, a ship with lots of ladders, whatever - you'll have to get close enough to touch the Kerbal. You'll have a fun time learning rendezvous. Combine all these and it could easily appear that the spaceship is going around her in circles. The high point might be higher or the low point lower so that they drift further apart and then closer again. They might have different tilts, or be tilted at different points, so one is going up while the other is going down. They're both in orbit around the same thing (Kerbin), but their orbits are different.Ĭompared to Kerbin, the two orbits might reach their lowest point at different spots so one would maybe be moving towards Kerbin while the other is moving away. Then bring the distance to zero with RCS.Īs far as traveling in circles around her, it will help to stop thinking of Agaena being stationary and the the spacecraft moving, as they're actually both moving. Time warp to the encounter, switch to Target mode on the ball and burn retrograde until you're at 0 m/s relative velocity. Finally, burn prograde at periapsis to bring apoapsis up until you get a nice close encounter down at periapsis. Then use maneuvers to adjust its orbit to match her orbit. The easiest way to make a rendezvous happen is to first get your ship up to orbit. You'll need to bring your rescue ship close enough to bump and slow enough that you can then switch to Agaena and have her grab on. Basically you need to be able to rendezvous with her controlling only the rescue ship. To get her back, you'll need RCS and a lot of practice. (Like race cars on a round track taking turns overtaking each other.) Relative to each other it looks like they orbit each other while they just orbit Kerbin with slightly different orbits. The inclination between the two orbits also mean that Agaena will be north-ish of the ship for some time and south-ish of it for some other time. When your Kerbal is at it's PE it moves faster then when it is on it's AP, accelerating and decelerating in between those points while catching up and falling behind your ship which has different PE and AP points and therefore different parts of the orbit where it is faster or slower. Look at both orbits in the map view to see this. Most likely your kerbal orbit will cross the ship orbit and have an inclination (angle) towards it. Your ship is on a sligtly different orbit around Kerbin than Agaena. On why your ship seems to orbit your kerbal: Orbital mechanics. The others have already answered on how to get her back (rendezvous a ship with spare room with her). AFAIK there is a scenario in the game for a spacewalk where you can practice kerbal controls safely.
